The rise of the Gulf nations

burj dubai

It makes me very sad to see Dubai, Abu Dhabi and other Gulf nations zoom by like this and to see Iran with all its intellectual capital struggling with the alphabets of modernization.

The rabbit hole runs very deep

Monday, May 5th, 2008

If you can read Farsi, you have some time and you care about some stranger woman in Iran who is on the death row, read this report. If you can’t read Farsi or you don’t have time but you still care about that woman, read my excerpt. If none of the above applies to you stop reading.
Here is the gist of the story: A woman named Akram, in Iran is forced into a marriage at the age of 13. She gets pregnant and has a daughter. Five years later the first husband divorces her and moves away. At the age of 20, she is forced into a second marriage with a 68 year old man. She files for divorce twice and her request is rejected by the court each time. At the age of 20, in a moment of desperation she kills her husband. Now she is sentenced to death and the only way to save her life is to pay around $66,000 to the family of the victim.
Now you might be thinking: “Iman was browsing the web, read this report and got emotional and decided to write something about it. Who knows if the story is true?” There is actually more to it than that. A good friend of mine in Iran who is a lawyer is a colleague of Akram’s lawyer and he has brought this story to my attention. Due to some technicalities, we have between one to two months left. So far, about $6,000 has been donated. If you feel like you can do anything about this person, contact me.
